Born in 1956 in Casablanca, Morocco.
José Nicolas began his photographic career working for a French regional news daily. He then went on working for humanitarian organizations such as “Médecins du Monde” (Doctors of the World). That gave him the opportunity to follow French politician and physician Bernard Kouchner, Doctors of the World’s co-founder to Kurdistan, Afghanistan, the Chinese sea, Lebanon, etc…
Over 12 years he worked for the Paris based photo agency Sipa-Press, for which he covered numerous conflicts (Chad, Liberian war in 1990, Lebanese war from 1984 to 1986, Afghanistan, Romanian revolution in 1989, Bosnia from 1991 to 1996, Somalia in 1992-1993).
Since 1996 José Nicolas works as a freelance photographer for newspapers, magazines and publishing houses. Over the years his work has received many international awards and internationally exhibited.
