Prix de la photographie de rue Sélection des rédacteurs – janvier 1970

Last month’s prix de photographie de rue, judged by photographer and New York Times photo editor Mikko Takkunen, left a lasting impression!

Our editorial team was particularly captivated by several entries that, while not making the final cut, demonstrated exceptional quality, and we are delighted to give these impressive submissions a special spotlight.

From a heartwarming moment between a couple on a bridge in Istanbul, to young horse riders on the outskirts of the Senegalese capital, and a fleeting moment of stillness amid chaos on the streets of Kolkata, these captivating images reflect the compelling beauty of everyday life around the world, and we believe deserve recognition.

Thank you to everyone who participated!

“Carnaval” - Puno, Pérou
Puno is a city on the Titicaca Lake. It was the “Carnaval” all around the country at this time. A huge tradition in every single city in Peru. Many people dance, music in the street. I took this photo in a little avenue when I saw this little child playing the flute with two balloons over his head. (March 2025) © Stéphane Allemand
"Rush" - Calcutta, Inde
Contrast between motion and stillness. The iconic yellow taxi, a recognizable symbol of Kolkata, serves as the stable anchor amidst a blur of fleeting figures. The use of a slow shutter speed transforms the bustling crowd into a wave of movement, while the direct, almost confrontational gaze of the taxi driver offers a striking moment of human connection. This image is a poetic representation of the city: chaos and routine, speed and stillness, the anonymous crowd and the individual soul, transforming a seemingly ordinary street scene into an evocative glimpse of Kolkata’s spirit. © Marius Burgelman
“Riding Practice” - Dakar, Senegal
Young boys ride horses on the outskirts of Dakar in January 2025, where equestrian culture thrives as a proud and enduring tradition in Senegalese life. Horses are not only symbols of status and heritage but are also essential means of transport, especially in rural and suburban areas. © Cooper Inveen

“The kiss of light”- Istanbul, Turquie

“India” - Rajasthan, Inde
An elderly Rajasthani man in a red turban sits on the steps of a vibrant blue house, embodying tradition and wisdom. A sacred cow, revered in Hindu culture, walks past him, symbolizing the deep spiritual connection between daily life and religion in India. The striking contrast of colors and textures enhances the rich cultural essence of the scene. © Fadhel Almutaghawi

“Blessings”- Katmandou, Népal

“White Gloves” - Coney Island, NYC, USA, 2024
The shadows of triangular shade sails cast intricate patterns on a bright yellow wall near an amusement park. I waited for the scene to come to life and was lucky when a man, dressed entirely in black except for his stark white gloves, walked into the frame, adding the perfect contrast to the vibrant backdrop. © Jean-Marc Bara

“The Hard Work of Finding God” - Varanasi, India, 2023
Varanasi is a city that stands still and yet manages to be ever more relevant because it grapples with evergreen issues of the human condition, specifically death. This composition seemed intriguing as each pilgrim positioned and gazed in an opposite direction. © Will Fortune
