When I was 16, struggling with dyslexia and unsure of my future, I picked up a camera for the first time. Starting of as an aspiring film maker I made my first short film, a Rocky Balboa inspired underdog boxing film (thanks to my friends for taking some very real punches to the head). For the first time in my life I'd found something I really enjoyed, and could apply in an academic sense. In my very own underdog story I got a place at my first choice university studying film. My first time on a plane I was 21, on my way to Portugal to film windsurfing. Other than a trip to the Netherlands and Paris when I was 7 & 8 I'd never been abroad before. Traveling for work gave me the itch. I traveled the world filming (mostly sailing) full time before going freelance and following passion projects. Eventually, as technology developed and my video camera could take photos I started snapping as an experiment. I soon discovered there is something special a photo does that video can't replicate. A single moment, frozen for the viewers full investigation and open to interpretation. A print, a physical thing I can hold, not just something on a (often small) screen. My first print had me hooked and I now travel the world filming and photographing as much as I can, trying to find unique places and people to observe, immerse myself in & capture. Travelling with a camera gives a unique experience, you notice more, and I find myself travelling differently. Lying on a beach in southern Spain doesn't do it for me, I'd rather be in a small village in an obscure corner of the globe, cold, a little hungry, camera in hand.
