Austin James is a dynamic visual artist who believes in the transformative power of storytelling to inspire change and reshape perspectives. A graduate of Stanford University's Film and Media Studies program, Austin has developed a versatile creative skillset over the years, balancing roles as both a video editor and freelance photographer. His post-production credits include acclaimed scripted television series and documentary films featured on Showtime, Hulu, and Netflix. As a photographer, Austin collaborates with clients to produce visually compelling content for online editorials, gallery exhibitions, and NFTs. His imaginative artistry and innovative approach has led to his selection as a 2023 Gallery 190 artist and a 2024 Hellman artist-in-residence with the UCSF Memory and Aging Center. Through a blend of theory and practice, Austin has honed his ability to craft emotionally resonant and intellectually engaging narratives. His work is driven by a commitment to empowering and uplifting community-focused creatives, activists, and entrepreneurs. Through his art, he strives to assert Black agency and celebrate Black life, using both still and moving images to tell impactful, powerful stories.
