Relationships and rhythm. Humor and humanity. Empathy and engagement. Jennifer Fox Armour is a visual storyteller, with a strong interest in mass media’s impact on society. When Jennifer was very young, her parents worked as professional photographers. Her earliest memories include being given empty film canisters–with a penny inside–to help stave off boredom while her mom and dad were busy in their studio. Because she grew up with photographers around her, Jennifer didn’t feel the need to pick up a camera until she became a parent and wanted to document her infant daughter’s life. It would take almost 30 years, during which time she owned her own photography studio, worked as a freelance photojournalist, writer, and social media manager (using photography to create content was her favorite part of this role) for Jennifer to understand how her latchkey-kid upbringing influenced and informed her photographic work. Raised during a time when parenting philosophy tended to be more hands-off than helicopter, Jennifer spent a lot of time alone. Navigating a gritty inner-city neighborhood with one of the highest crime rates in the country was unnerving, so having keen observation skills and being street savvy was a necessity. These traits became innate and are the foundation of Jennifer’s practice, which often includes elements of street photography. As human beings grow more divided, Jennifer’s search for signs of unification becomes more urgent. Her photographs are invitations to connect. In addition to appearing in print publications, Jennifer’s photographs have been featured in group exhibitions in galleries, museums, and online. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Georgia and lives with her husband and pug in Los Angeles.
