Makoto Sato (b. 1975, Hiroshima) is a portrait and documentary photographer based in Machida, Tokyo. Working with on-camera flash and daylight sync, he captures the split-second overlap of a city’s noise and an individual’s quiet. His recurring motif is the dialogue between those who stand in the light and those who create it. Sato is currently developing Twin Lights, a parallel series that follows performers under the stage glare and the craft-workers whose unseen labor makes that brilliance possible.
