I am photographer and writer based in the mountains of North Carolina. I have my MFA in Photography and a BA in Journalism and Creative Writing. I live between two little mountain towns, Marshall and Hot Spring; both were destroyed and flooded by Hurricane Helene. If wet plate collodion teaches a photographer anything – it is the power of intention, slowing down and trusting the process. There is something so magical about the tintype technique and its historical process. Embracing this challenging medium, imperfections and all, humbled me and allowed me to find my creative voice in this work. I wanted to capture these wild times in a tintype time capsule, using similar technology from when the infamous 1916 flood tore through town. I have created all of the images in this series without charging my clients. Despite expensive chemicals and supplies, I wanted everyone who has a deep connection to Marshall to have the opportunity to take part in the magic. My subjects chose their locations and how they wanted their stories told in their aluminum rectangular. While the image would slowly make its appearance in the chemicals, the stories would start pouring out as we made tangible light from so much darkness. It has been an incredible gift to make this work collaboratively with my town and continue to process the enormity of what we've all just survived. To bear witness of history being made and making photographic magic in the street together. What an incredible experience we have shared while creating tangible, one-of-a-kind treasures of analog art.
