Judge: Tatsuo Susuki
Tatsuo Suzuki is a Japanese photographer, renowned for his visceral, monochrome depictions of everyday life in his homeland.
Born in Tokyo in 1965, he began photographing seriously in 2008 when he captured a candid image on the streets of Enoshima (a small island just south of the city) that made him realize it was this iteration of the medium that he wanted to pursue. Aside from one year at photography school, he is completely self-taught, his practice blends dynamic snapshots of quotidian life with ‘close-up’ portraits captured on the streets.
Over the years Suzuki has received a host of awards and has exhibited internationally on numerous occasions, including at Photo Shanghai in 2015 and in London in 2016. In 2020, he published his debut photobook, Friction / Tokyo Street, with Steidl, which featured an extensive collection of his Tokyo street photography.
