“Still, Not Empty” - Nagano, Japan - 2025
I took this photo because the monkey didn’t feel like a “wildlife subject” in that moment; it felt like a person caught in a private pause. Everything about the scene was heavy and still: the wet fur, the muted light, the way the face sat half-hidden under that rough crown of hair. I wanted to photograph the exact point where an animal stops performing for the world and simply exists. The camera wasn’t there to make it dramatic; it was there to respect the quiet. I framed it closely so the viewer can’t escape into the background, the only thing to do is sit with the expression and admit how familiar it feels. © Miller Dabbs
