The Bashkir people have always had to defend their land, culture, and religion, but after their forced incorporation into Russia, even more tragic chapters opened in their history: the seizure of land and Christianization, which led to endless uprisings and the slow erasure of the ethnic group. Leaders of the Bashkir uprisings were tortured: their eyes were gouged out, and their tongues and ears were torn off. The nationality melted away like smoke. After the forced incorporation into Russia, the Bashkirs began to disappear as a nationality, and those who disagreed with the authorities’ policies were imprisoned for any expression of free speech. © Gulnaz Galimullina

“A Gaze Stronger Than the Hammer” - Jharia, West Bengal, India
For decades, coal has been burning beneath the earth, turning the land into a landscape of smoke, fire, and fear. The local people of Jharia, known as the Burning City, survive by cutting coal from this dangerous ground, burning it, and supplying it to nearby markets. Toxic gas fills the air, poisoning both the environment and human lives. Here, age has no meaning. From the elderly to children, everyone is forced into this labour. The child in this frame stands beside his mother, holding a hammer instead of a schoolbook. In an environment where survival comes before dreams, education is replaced by responsibility. He works not by choice, but by compulsion—to help his parents, to keep his household alive. This image speaks of a childhood stolen by necessity, where innocence fades amid smoke, and growing up becomes an obligation rather than a journey. © Happy Mukherjee
