“Sumaj Orck’o” (“Beautiful Hill”) - Cerro Rico de Potosí, Bolivia
Cerro de Potosí, also known as the Cerro Rico de Potosí, and in the Quechua language as Sumaj Orck’o (“beautiful hill”); named Sumaj Orck’o before its plunder and subsequent exploitation, which began 476 years ago. Now, “beautiful hill” seems ironic. The Mines of Potosí were and still remain an important mining center located on the Cerro Rico de Potosí, Bolivia. Cerro Rico, with more than 4500 meters high and bordered by miles of tunnels of the inexhaustible mines of Potosí, which contributed to the Spanish Empire and all of Europe during the time of the conquest of America, represents more silver than any other place in the world. Its exploitation, active in the 21st century, was one of the great reasons for the growth of the “old continent” from the 16th century, at the cost of the forced labor of indigenous slaves and countless corpses throughout the centuries. The Potosi mines are some of the oldest in Latin America, still operating for half a millennium. These mines are also an open wound from the colonization in America. © Javier-Clemente-Martínez

I captured this image right after sunrise on a perfectly tranquil day during my first trip to Alaska. “Paracas” - Peru | Part of the series “Desierto Sur”
One of my earliest memories is traveling with my family from Lima, Peru direction to The South on the South Pan-American road (on many occasions all the way to Santiago de Chile +or- 4000km). I recall most of the journey, an empty vast desert splashed from time to time with green valleys and the Pacific Ocean not far from my window. Through this series, I intend to explore the changes that have been altering our collective memory, I intend to open spaces and to portrait the absence and the evidence, I am interested in sharing a self-reflection in a profound way, I feel the desert in comparison with other environments it is powerful in nature and personality and reminds us how fragile we are as human beings. I have been 5 years photographing the Southern desert, driving endless hours on the Pan-American road. The desert that Peru and Chile share is unique in its form, nature, and geography, due to its location between the Andes Range and the Pacific Ocean. © Jorge Dieguez
