Landscape Award Editors’ Picks of November 2024

While last month’s landscape competition, judged by acclaimed Swedish photographer Tobias Hägg, crowned its winners, we’re thrilled to showcase a selection of remarkable images that didn’t make the final cut.

“Tent Ridge Rise” - Tent Ridge, Alberta, Canada
Waking up at 2am never looked so good. Having this view to ourselves on a windless fall morning with the larch trees in full bloom was a special moment. Tent Ridge, Kananaskis Alberta. Shot in 2022. © Collin Toews

“Rocks and ocean” - Vareid, Lofoten islands

“A Dynamic Interplay” - Iceland
Amidst the dark Icelandic volcanic ash, three irregular sulfur ponds create a captivating contrast. The two smaller, nearly circular ponds flank a larger, less defined one, their vivid hues standing out against the stark, barren landscape. These natural formations, born from volcanic activity, showcase the dynamic interplay between order and chaos, capturing the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland’s volcanic terrain. © Thibault Gerbaldi
“Painting” - Turin, Italy
This image was taken in November 2022 in Turin, Italy. Poking out of the trees is the Mole Antonelliana, Turin’s architectural symbol. It was a cold late-autumn Saturday, and the high clouds predicted a colorful sunset. Call it bad luck or good luck, I arrived late for the sunset on Isabella’s Bridge, one of the most romantic places in the city, but as I was setting up my tripod, the clouds started taking up this stunning pink color. “Views of Iceland” - Múlagljúfur Canyon, Iceland
This breathtaking aerial shot of Iceland’s Múlagljúfur Canyon reveals a rugged landscape shrouded in mist, leading the eye to a distant waterfall cascading from snow-capped peaks. The winding river cuts through steep, moss-covered cliffs, creating a dramatic contrast with the icy mountain in the background. The interplay of earthy greens, volcanic rock, and soft fog evokes an atmosphere of mystery and grandeur, capturing the raw, untouched beauty of Iceland’s highlands. September 2024 © Timo Zilz
“Seoul #3” - Seoul, South Korea

“The Devil’s Jaw” - Norway
This image was taken after a long day full of raining. For a split second, the clouds opened up during sunset creating this amazing light situation. The photo was taken in Norway in September 2023. © Lukas Trixl
“The Devil’s Jaw” - Saana Tunturi, finland
At the top of the Tunturis, these gentle mountains formed several hundred million years ago, rising above the tree line. The walk is beautiful, the sky is blue and the -38 degrees known on the road are only a distant memory. We arrive at the top just as the sun sets on the horizon. The belt of Venus settles behind us, opposite the sunset. I turn around and watch these improbable colors take place on the horizon. I think I have rarely seen a more beautiful spectacle. The sky in this national park is one of the purest on the continent, which amplifies the contrast between the colors observed and the shadow of the Earth. © Olivier Jarry-Lacombe

“Bloody Milk”- Mount Lemmon, Santa Catalina Mountains, Arizona, USA
In early October 2016, I raced up Mount Lemmon while storms in the south grew and the sun sat with vibrant colors. I still remember the feeling I had when I was going to bed after capturing this photo. I was camping on the side of the mountain, and I couldn’t wait to get home to edit this frame. I had totally forgotten about this photo until I recently found it on an old hard drive. I had to re-edit it and was reminded of the excitement I had when I first took it. © Joshua Coe
