Landscape Award Editors’ Picks of November 2023

Following the results of last month’s landscape competition, judged by American photographer Jim Richardson, our editorial team is delighted to share some of their favorite images that didn’t make the final selection, but we believe are well worthy of exposure.

We were genuinely taken aback by the quality of submissions we received and a heartfelt thanks goes out to all the photographers who dedicated their time to share their creations with us. Our world is undergoing rapid changes, and landscape photography is more significant than ever before. Thank you for showing us the magnificence of our planet and shedding light on what we stand to lose.

“Landmannalaugar” - Landmannalaugar, Iceland
Landmannalaugar is a location in Iceland’s Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the Highlands. It is on the edge of the Laugahraun lava field. This lava field was formed by an eruption in approximately 1477. It is largely known for its natural geothermal hot springs and surrounding landscape. © Carlo Alberto Conti
“Contemplation” - Lake of Bourget, France
Lac du Bourget, also locally known as Lac Gris or Lac d’Aix, is a lake at the southernmost end of the Jura Mountains in the department of Savoie, France. It is the deepest lake located entirely within France, and either the largest or second largest after Lac de Grand-Lieu depending on season. © Christophe Baudot

“Autumn in Alaska” - Knik Glacier and Lake George, Alaska, USA
An aerial view captured from a helicopter unveils the captivating splendor of Lake George area in Anchorage, Alaska. The scene is adorned with floating icebergs on the lake’s surface, the winding Knik River, and a vibrant forest of Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) trees displaying their autumnal foliage in late September. In the top left corner, the magnificent Knik Glacier stands alongside the majestic Chugach Mountains. “En Pointe - Deadvlei, Namibia
Deadvlei means “dead marsh.” The clay pan was formed through repeated flooding of the Tsauchab river, which allowed a forest of camel thorn trees to thrive in the middle of a valley surrounded by giant 1000’ sand dunes. A millennium ago, the climate changed and the dunes fully enclosed the valley causing the trees to die. The wood is preserved through the heat of the sun and lack of rainfall. At dawn the direct backlighting of the sun causes the sand to explode in color, and the blue sky reflects off the white clay pan. One of the wonders of the world in my view. © Barry Crosthwaite

Lagazuoi is a mountain in the Dolomites of northern Italy, lying at an elevation of 2,835 metres, about 18 kilometres southwest by road from Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Veneto Region. The mountain is part of the Ampezzo Dolomites Natural Park. © Markus Albert
“A Sheep’s Surprise.” - Faroe Islands, 2019
After deciding to spend the night in the car, we started to hike up to Kallur lighthouse on the island of Kalsoy. We positioned ourselves up on a cliff to take our planned sunset pictures of the enormous cliff behind the small lighthouse, when suddenly those sheep appeared in front of my lens. The sheep and I were taken by surprise, but I was quick enough to capture the moment before it quickly left again. © Mario Walker
“Rapa Valley” - Sarek National Park, Lapland, Sweden
The Rapa Valley is a 35 kilometres long valley in Northern Sweden, and the largest in the Sarek National Park, part of the Laponian area. Nestled within the rugged embrace of Sarek National Park, the Rapa Valley emerges as a pristine wilderness, a sanctuary of natural beauty. Amidst the wilderness, one may encounter the indigenous Sami people, who have inhabited this land for centuries. Their traditional lifestyle, deeply rooted in harmony with nature, adds a cultural richness to the Rapa Valley experience. © Christoffer Åhlén
