Color Photography Award Editors’ Picks of June 2022

Following the results of last month’s Color Photography Award judged by Alessia Glaviano⁠ Visual Director at Vogue Italy, we are delighted to share some of the competition entries that didn’t make it to the final round but nevertheless impressed us with their overall strength and quality, as well as the innovative way in which they responded to the theme.

So many talented photographers from across the globe responded to our call for entries, and we received an incredible variety of captivating images. Unfortunately, we couldn’t give an award to every entrant, but it is our honor and pleasure to share the work of a few artists whose images, we believe are well worthy of exposure.

“What nature knows IX”
With the photography project “What nature knows”, Rognli draws in references from his affiliation with Arctic Northern Norway, to light, darkness and the seasons. He transforms ordinary landscapes into an enigmatic place to be and takes us on a visual experience in the evening and the atmosphere of the night. In the project he immerses light installations in water, and creates harmony where there is conflict between the elements. He illuminates nature with LED-lights and luminescent material. © Gjert Rognli
“Mineral Matter II” - Iceland
Mineral Matter explores Iceland’s dynamic river deltas where volcanic ash, sediment and colorful minerals are collected and moved by the powerful travels of glacier water. In this beautiful yet forbidding landscape where the forces of nature are profound, the limits of humanity’s dominion over the environment are brought into question. © Brooke Holm
“Roma singer” - Thar Desert, Rajasthan, India
As the train hurtled through the Thar Desert, the man sang a beautiful tune to the passengers. The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, is a large arid region in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent that covers an area of 200,000 km² and forms a natural boundary between India and Pakistan. It is the world’s 20th-largest desert, and the world’s 9th-largest hot subtropical desert. © Robi Chakraborty

This image is part of a series on barrenness and ‘fruitfulness’ women. Biblically, a rainbow represents God’s promise to his people, and the blackberries, full of seed, are the ‘fruit’ some women long for. © Claire Dam

"The French Lady
Elisa Bonaparte as princess of style showed magnificence, luxury.
She profoundly transformed Lucca and at the same time she preserved its role and its goods. The court was modelled and regulated on that of the Tuileries with chamberlains, ladies, squires, pages, chaplains, alms-givers, officers of honour. The celebration of feasts and ceremonies was introduced. The old and the new aristocracy are implicated in a social pomp contest. © Nicoletta Cerasomma
