Cuba A photography project by Alex Almeida

Brazilian photographer Alex Almedia captures the intrepid spirit of the enigmatic isle.

Cuba has long inspired and engendered great art, its cobbled streets and colorful timeworn edifices immortalized by the works of eminent writers, painters, and photographers throughout history.

A remarkably intuitive practitioner, Almeida is a Brazilian documentary photographer whose practice is underpinned by a deep humanism and informed by a desire to convey the stories of those who have historically been marginalized and underrepresented.

His evocative images of Cuba strike a delicate balance between visceral and contemplative, permeated with movement and energy, yet simultaneously sensitive and profound, and though that which he depicts – the ubiquitous vintage cars, the revolutionary murals – may seem somewhat prototypic, his unique sensibility reveals them in a new, almost epiphanic light.

– Alex Almeida is a Brazilian photographer whose compelling documentary practice investigates themes of development, environment, culture, and ethnicity, both in his home country and beyond.
