Made in Cuba
Cuba is unquestionably one of the greatest travel destinations in the world. The people are wonderful and of mixed race which is a product, of course, of their Spanish colonial history, the slave trade and their indigenous roots. As a result of many complex political factors - a US embargo, the break up of the USSR, the 1959 communist revolution and a humid tropical climate they are resilient and inventive. There are still approximately 70,000 classic cars on the island which date back to the 50’s and have been kept in working order by skilled mechanics. Their economy is truly struggling but perhaps there is some hope in a more sustainable future - something, in a way, which has been imposed upon them. The streets of old Havana are safe and atmospheric with most people living in old colonial decaying buildings.
