The Larim of Kimotong
The granite hills of Kimotong are remnants of old granite batholiths, now exposed with weathering and erosion as inselbergs. The Laarim villages are at the foot of the mountains where runoff from the mountains creates fertile soils and savannah lands peppered with acacia trees, euphorbia and occasional bottle trees.
The architecture of the villages is almost whimsical with stepped and concave thatched roofs and a small ‘spire like’ centre piece which is never quite straight. Sometimes there are white land snail shells embellishing the lower parts of the thatch. These are placed here to provide protection and also decoration. Their compounds are fastidiously swept on a daily basis and are spotlessly cleaned. The Laarim are still predominantly animist.
