Black & White Award Editors’ Picks of February 2022

Following the results of the last Black & White photography award, judged by renowned Japanese artist Tatsuo Suzuki, we want to share some of the best competition entries that didn’t make it to the final round, but showed a remarkable variety of skills, creativity, and impressed the editorial team in their overall quality.

Landscape, conceptual, documentary, portrait, and more, we received a fantastic range of works from all photographic fields. We are delighted to highlight the work of some of the many talented photographers who joined the award and whose images are well worthy of exposure.

This image is drawn from my book ”Where Have the Birds Gone?”. During the four years that I lived in Japan (2015-19), I spent countless hours exploring on foot the streets and back alleys of Tokyo. Almost every day, I was stopped dead in my own tracks by the unexpected sight of something that did not belong to the scene, or the deafening silence of something that cried out to be there. © Nicolas St-Pierre

“The Price of Charcoal” - Mozambique
According to Unicef an estimated 158 million children aged 5-14 are engaged in child labor - one in six children in the world. Across the world, millions of children, while living on the streets, are engaged in hazardous conditions such as working in mines, exposure to chemicals in factories, physically damaging machinery in mills, pesticides in agriculture, toxic fumes on large-scale dumps, etc. These children operate on many fronts and yet they are invisible, toiling forcibly as domestic servants in homes, laboring behind sealed doors of sweatshops, and hidden from view in plantations. The children then emerge at night to haunt the perilous streets. In these inhospitable environments, the children are likely to be too consuming highly addictive and life-damaging drugs. © Mário Macilau
“Receding trees” - United Kingdom

“Secret Garden” - Florida, USA
In Winter Park, Florida, the oak tree in this photo with its beautiful hanging moss was removed later due to its unhealthy condition. One day in the Spring of 2020, I was so lucky to have captured the Great Egret and the oak tree before it was removed! The oak branches and hanging moss framed the Egret while I waited for it to take off. Finally, my patience was rewarded, and I was able to capture an exquisite moment. During post-processing, I selected the sky and make it darker. Then I added the light to create a more mysterious and artistic impression. The contrast also highlighted the elegance and beauty of the Great Egret. © Fenqiang Liu

“Chapel” - Dolomites, Italy
There is a tiny chapel at the top of the Gardena pass in the Dolomites. When I was taking photographs higher above the pass, I noticed this very interesting stream of light on the mountain and thought it would be a great combination with the chapel. © Ales Krivec
