Jury's Feedback
1ST PRIZE: France Leclerc
“This image from the camel market in Buraidha, Saudi Arabia, embodies the theme of the visual story in a lively encounter, reinforcing the energy of the moment with its graphic composition. The two men frame the camel, who has our sympathy, outlined against the sky as it is hauled overhead by a crane. The camel’s head and two front legs are clearly delineated, in the same way that the men’s hand gestures are articulated. Parallel to the truck railing, the horizontal lineup of camel heads (with those teeth!) creates another design element in this layered frame. We are witness to an active convergence caught in the midst of an ongoing story.” — Elizabeth Krist
2ND PRIZE: Maria Bratan
“This group photograph of young Gagauz women in their national dress emanates a mystery through the sense of movement. With the dark background and muted lighting, it’s as if they are warning us that the heritage of this Turkic ethnic group based in southern Moldova and southwestern Ukraine is disappearing. The ghostly figures throw the two central women even more into relief, conveying a sense of strength and steadfastness amidst the dissolution. Like many of the images in this selection, the scene hints at a more complex story. ” — Elizabeth Krist
3RD PRIZE: Shreenivas Yenni
“A dynamic image perfectly encompassing the passion and dedication of these Pehlwani wrestlers for their centuries-long tradition. The impeccable timing and framing immerse us right into the pit to experience the motion of this spectacular acrobatic move. More than just a visual feast, it is an image that plays on all our senses and tells the story of one of India’s many ancient traditions..” – The Independent Photographer Editors
